The latest exhibition at London's National Portrait Gallery, entitled Mick Jagger: Young in the 60s, features photographic portraits of singer-songwriter Mick Jagger and the iconic band, The Rolling Stones. The exhibition, inspired by the success of a recent display at Les Rencontres d’Arles Photographie 2010, coincides with the publication of the British edition of Mick Jagger: The Photobook.
Mick Jagger and The Rolling Stones
Sir Michael Philip "Mick" Jagger (born 26 July 1943) rose to fame in the 1960s to become one of the most important singer-songwriters of the time. During the 1960s Jagger also embarked on an acting career, appearing in films such as Ned Kelly and Performance. He formed The Rolling Stones in 1962 with Brian Jones and Keith Richards who were soon joined by Charlie Watts and Bill Wyman. The group enjoyed 15 hit singles during the decade, the first of which was Come On in July 1963. Fifty years on, The Rolling Stones are still one of the most important, and most popular, bands in the UK. In 2002 Mick Jagger was created a Knight for his contribution to popular culture.
Mick Jagger: Young in the 60s – About the Exhibition
The exhibition explores the first decade of Jagger's career showing how Jagger, and The Rolling Stones, were influenced by pop art and psychedelia. The display features images from the rock group's tours and photo shoots, album covers, and other important events in the life of the band.
Philip Townsend's photograph of the group's first official photo shoot is shown together with a study, by Michael Cooper, of the album cover for Their Satanic Majesties Request (1967). In 1968, Michael Joseph photographed The Stones posing with a group of animals for the gate-fold of their album Beggar's Banquet. The display also showcases previously unshown images including a colour portrait of Jagger, taken in 1967, by Colin Jones.
Mick Jagger: Young in the 60s also features portraits by Gered Mankowitz. Mankowitz, probably one of the youngest photographers to work with The Stones, was just 18 when he became their official photographer. The exhibition includes a portrait of Jagger with his beloved Aston Martin DB6.
