London’s Design Museum is one of the world’s leading museums devoted entirely to contemporary design. For 2010 the museum is planning a wide variety of exhibitions including:
- Less and More – The Design Ethos of Dieter Rams
- Urban Africa – A Photographic Survey by David Adjaye
- Illustrated Fashion
- John Pawson
The Museum will also be showcasing the work of Designers in Residence Asif Khan, Bethan Wood, and Farm from 27th January to 8th March 2010.
Less and More – The Design Ethos of Dieter Rams
Between 1955 and 1995 designer Dieter Rams either created or supervised the creation of more than 500 products for German manufacturer Braun as well as furniture for Vitsoe. A retrospective exhibition of work by Rams will look at how his design ethos changed the way we think about domestic design.
- Less and More will be on show from 18th November 2009 – 14th March 2010
Urban Africa – A Photographic Survey by David Adjaye
Architect David Adjaye was born in Dar-Es-Salam, Tanzania, and moved to London in 1979. Adjaye’s major photographic survey of important African cities are part of a continuing project studying new patterns of urban settlement.
Adjaye has recorded key features of African cities and suburban developments choosing places that have a special meaning for him as an architect, rather than trying to create a detailed record of every place.
The Design Museum’s exhibition will include a series of large-scale projections showing the eclectic mix of African architecture.

Illustrated Fashion (Working Title)
This exhibition will highlight some of the most well-known fashion drawings of the 20th and 21st Centuries, many of which are acknowledged as works of art in their own right. The show will feature illustrations by George Lepape, Mats Gustafson, Francois Berthoud and others.
The drawings, loaned to the Design Museum by Joëlle Chariau, owner of Galerie Bartsch & Chariau (Munich, Germany), will be displayed together with key garments from the couture houses of Coco Chanel, Christian Dior, Yamamoto, Poiret, Comme des Garçons and Victor & Rolf.
- Illustrated Fashion will be on view from 23rd June – 31st October 2010
John Pawson – British Architect
This is the first show of British architect John Pawson’s work to be held in the UK. The exhibition will feature specially commissioned photography and short films, large-scale models and a 1:1 installation designed specifically for the show.
Pawson is renowned for his simple, clean designs including the new Cistercian Monastery of Novy Dvur in Bohemia, Calvin Klein’s flagship store in Manhattan, USA, and the Sackler Crossing at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, England.
- John Pawson will be on display from 22rd September 2010 – 16th January 2011
Designers in Residence – Asif Khan, Bethan Wood, Farm
The Design Museum’s Artist in Residence scheme, now in its third year, highlights the work of emerging designers. The programme offers support in the early stages of their careers providing opportunities for them to develop new or existing work.
- Asif Kahn, Bethan Wood and Farm will be Artists in Residence from 27th January – 8th March 2010
